Total Distribution Points(TDP)
What is TDP?
Total Distribution Points (TDP) is the sum of per-SKU ACV across every SKU a brand has in a given universe. A brand with 5 SKUs at 60% ACV each has 300 TDPs in that universe.
TDP is the right metric to use when discussing total brand-level distribution growth, because it captures both adding SKUs and increasing ACV on existing SKUs. A brand that goes from 4 SKUs at 50% ACV (200 TDPs) to 6 SKUs at 50% ACV (300 TDPs) has grown TDPs 50%, even though the average per-item ACV is unchanged.
The metric matters most in syndicated data conversations (Circana, NielsenIQ) where the analyst is comparing brand performance over time and needs a single distribution number to plot. Velocity per TDP, also known as velocity per point of ACV, is the cleaner productivity measure because it controls for distribution growth.
